The Ukraine War: What You Need to Know
Recent: In the eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk, which is set to become the next major battlefield, local officials have reported heavy Russian shelling in recent days. Russia, meanwhile, claimed full control of the Azovstal steel plant in the Black Sea port city of Mariupol on Friday, saying more than 1,900 Ukrainian fighters had surrendered from the facility – a figure much higher than other estimates.
War: A slowly reviving Russian army is gaining ground in eastern Ukraine against heroic but unprepared Ukrainian forces. The United States and its allies are rushing to supply large quantities of weapons to the Ukrainians in case they need to stop the Russians.
Weapons: Ukraine is using weapons such as javelin antitank missiles and switchblade “Kamikaz” drones supplied by the United States and other allies. Russia has used an array of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have caught the attention of analysts and raised concerns.
