A rare Mercedes-Benz race car sold for 14 143 million earlier this month, making it the most expensive car ever sold.

RM Sotheby’s has announced that it has auctioned off a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Wohlenhaut coupe for 135 million euros, or about 3 143 million. The sale topped the previous record for the most expensive car sold at auction to over $ 95 million, and topped the record for $ 70 million for a car sold individually.

The winning bid was made by Simon Kidston, a British car collector, consultant and dealer, on behalf of an unnamed client. Kidston lobbied the Mercedes-Benz board for 18 months to consider selling the car.

The sale, first reported by Hagerti Insider, was held on May 5 at a secret and highly unusual auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Only selected collectors and Mercedes-Benz customers were invited to attend.

The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe is one of only two built in 1955 and is considered the most valuable car in auto history. It was built by Mercedes’ race department and was named after its chief engineer and designer, Rudolf Uhlenhat.

The car was based on the company’s successful W 196 R Grand Prix car, which won two world championships with driver Juan Manuel Fangio. The 300 SLR had a larger, 3.0-liter engine and was able to reach 180 miles per hour, making it one of the fastest road-legal vehicles at the time.

Mercedes-Benz owned 300 SLRs, both of which were sold, and the May 5 sale surprised many collectors.

“It is reasonable to say that no one ever imagined that this car would be offered for sale, so it was a great honor for Mercedes-Benz to ask RM Sotheby’s to conduct the auction,” said Peter Walman, chairman of RM Sotheby’s for UK and EMEA. .

Mercedes-Benz said it would fund the creation of a fund for scholarships and educational research in the environment and decarbonization.

Prior to the sale, the most expensive car sold at auction was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold for $ 48.5 million at RM Sotheby’s in 2018. A 1963 Ferrari GTO was sold privately in 2018 for 70 million.
