In a rare joint television interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska said Russia’s aggression in Ukraine had “separated” their families as it did for millions of families across the country.

Zelenska, who has two children with Ukraine’s war-torn president, admits he has rarely seen Zelensky since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to be sent to Ukraine. She said that since then she and her husband have been communicating mainly on the phone.

“Our family is as isolated as any other family in Ukraine,” Zelenska said. “She is OK. We haven’t seen him in about two and a half months.

Yet Zelenska quickly dismissed the notion raised by an interviewer on the Ukrainian television network ICTV that the war had “essentially taken away her husband.”

“No one is taking my husband away from me, not even fighting,” Zelenska replied.

The interview marks the second time since the Russian invasion on February 24 that the married couple appeared together in 2003. During the sitting, Zelenska said she was “grateful” for their joint television presence because it meant they could finally spend time together.

“A date on TV, thank you,” he joked. Zelensky shook his head.

Early on in the war, Zelensky stated that he had “Goal No. 1” and his family’s “Goal No. 2”.

“They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state,” he told Ukrainians in a February speech, although he refused to flee. Instead, Zelensky took to the streets of the capital, posting protest videos on social media that earned him worldwide acclaim, as his wife and children fled to unknown places for their protection.

During their interview, Zelenska said she woke up with “strange words” when Russia launched its attack and noticed that her husband was not by her side. Zelensky was already awake and wearing a suit in the next room.

“It simply came to our notice then,” he said.

The war has raised the profile of the Ukrainian president, who has provided video addresses to Ukrainians most of the night and has spoken in parliaments around the world. From the Grammys that started last week to the Cannes Film Festival, he has practically attended.

Before becoming president three years ago, Zelensky was a comedian and actor who played the role of president on screen. The 44-year-old has also sung at Paddington Bear and won the 2006 Ukrainian version of “Dancing with the Stars”.

Zelenska, 44, is a screenwriter and has rarely been seen in public since the Russian invasion. She was first spotted celebrating Mother’s Day in Ukraine in early May, in western Ukraine with U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, who crossed the border from Slovakia.

Zelensky and his wife made their television appearances when Russia began to recover in Ukraine after massive losses. “We have broken the back of one of the largest or most powerful armies in the world,” Zelensky told reporters.

During the couple’s hour-long interview, Zelenska expressed hope that once the war was over, she would be able to return to focus on issues affecting Ukrainian women, such as unequal pay.

“After the victory, we will remember the heroism of our Ukrainian women,” she said.
